Gloucester Rugby Information

Kingsholm, which sits close to Gloucester’s city’s centre, has been Gloucester Rugby’s home since 1981. Kingsholm boasts a capacity of just over 16,000. One of Kingsholm’s stands is known as the “Shed” because it was said to resemble a cowshed. That stand was opened during Gloucester’s first year at the venue.

Gloucester is known by the unofficial nickname of the ‘Cherry and Whites’ because of their club colours, traditionally red and white hoops. Given their location, Gloucester enjoys a lot of West Country derby rivalry matches with Bath and the Bristol Bears.

Gloucester Rugby History

The Gloucester Rugby team was founded in 1873. They started life by sharing Spa Ground with Gloucestershire Cricket club until they moved on to Kingsholm. They are one of only a small handful of clubs who have been in the Premiership since its inaugural season in 1997/98.

Prior to 1997/98, Gloucester had played all seasons of the Courage League in Division 1 without winning a title. While the Cherry and Whites have not won a Premiership title, they finished at the top of the regular-season table in 2003, 2007 and 2008.

On the first two occasions, they lost the Premiership final to the Wasps and Leicester respectively, while in 2008, they lost in the semi-finals. Bigger success has come Gloucester’s way on the European front, as the Cherry and Whites are two-time winners of the Challenge Cup in 2006 and 2015.

Two of the most famous players at the international level while playing for the Gloucester Rugby team are Mike Teague and Phil Vickery.
