Wasps Information

The Wasps are a Coventry-based Premiership rugby team and they share grounds with the Coventry FC. They play their home games at the Coventry Building Society Arena, which was formerly called the Ricoh Arena. The Wasps are not originally from Coventry; they were formed in West London and were known as the London Wasps.

They have always been a bit of a nomadic club. Their move to Coventry happened in 2014 after more than a decade at Wycombe Wanderers’ Adams Park in Buckinghamshire. Other homes they have occupied include Loftus Road and Repton Avenue. The Wasps are famous for their black and yellow kit.

Wasps History

The Wasps Football Club was born out of Hampstead Football Club, which was founded in 1866. Following a split soon after formation, some members left to form the Wasps in 1867, while the rest remained to form the Harlequins team.

The club is one of the founding members of the RFC and they claimed a couple of Courage League Division 1 titles, including the final season of that competition in 1996/97. The Premiership was created for the following campaign.

It was not a long wait for the first Wasps Premiership title. They dominated the top tier in its early years, winning the Premiership three straight seasons between 2003 and 2005. In 2008, they won a fourth Premiership title.

Another Wasps Premiership title was nearly added in 2017, but they lost the final to the Exeter Chiefs. During that rich period of form, the Wasps also won the Challenge Cup for the first time in 2003 and claimed the Heineken Cup twice on the European front.

Notable former players for the Wasps include Kenny Logan, Steve Thompson, Josh Lewsey and Lawrence Dallaglio.
