Leicester Tigers History
Founded in 1880, the Leicester Tigers have a storied history. About five years after their founding, the team gained the nickname of the Tigers. The Tigers hold more top-tier titles in England than any other team and they have also achieved some tremendous successes in European club action.
Twice were Leicester Tigers champions of the old Courage League 1st Division, including the inaugural season of competition. When the Premiership started in the 1997/98 season, Leicester finished in fourth place.
During the next four consecutive seasons, they won the Premiership title, setting early dominance in the competition.
They would add to those titles in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2013. Leicester has been a Premiership runner-up on five other occasions. From 2004 through to 2013, Leicester reached a remarkable nine straight Premiership finals.
In both 2001 and 2002, in back-to-back wins, the Leicester Tigers won the Heineken Cup. Among their club legends are England’s World Cup-winning captain Martin Johnson, Dan Cole, Neil Back, Dean Richards and Rory Underwood.
